Wet weather, many mushrooms
Hello there everyone, this is your friendly neighborhood Realtor, Jay Young, with the Rivers Team. It has been a wet time in Tallahassee lately and that is a very nice thing if you are a mushroom. You may have notices more than usual amounts of these fun-guys popping up in your yard and the surrounding area. Mushrooms can be seasonal; some showing up in the summer, some in the winter, and still those that can make an appearance all year long. While the temperature changes pursuant to the time of year there is one constant in the appearance of mushrooms: rain.
You may wonder why I am going on about mushrooms while this is a blog written from a Realtor. Aside from my personal attraction to these flowers of the earth, they have an effect on the home owner’s yard. Part of home ownership is property ownership, and so I take it as part of my profession to enlighten people on the whole package. I believe that many people mistakenly believe that mushrooms are bad things and that the appearance in the yard is therefor also a negative thing. While there are certain fungi that are parasitic or opportunistic pathogens, most of them are of great assistance to the overall health of the soil and plants growing there.
A mushroom is the fruiting body of the fungus that is dwelling in the soil, all around the roots of plants, or in the dead wood lying on the ground. The fungus dwelling in the soil, or in the dead wood, is breaking down organic material and returning it to the soil. The fungi that is living around the roots of the plants is part of a strong mutualistic relationship; there is a lot of research that has been done lately showing the benefit of this relationship. The plants that have a fungal host grow bigger, faster, and are stronger. There are even fungi that seek out and destroy unwanted bacteria as well as nematodes in the soil.
So as you can see, having these mushrooms show up in your yard is almost always a positive thing that should fill you with joy for it means that your yard is healthy place.
